What is process water or industrial water?

Process water, often referred to as industrial or service water, is required for specific industrial, commercial, or agricultural processes. Unlike drinking water, it is not used for food or beverage preparation, but rather for cooling units, boiler systems, or manufacturing machinery. Even though it is not intended for consumption, process water must still meet certain quality standards to be suitable for its intended use. For example, process water should be free of limescale and salts.

For certain applications, it may be beneficial to treat greywater through extensive filtration to produce process water. Greywater is lightly contaminated wastewater that can be sourced from various origins, such as wash water. It is typically water that is treated for secondary use through water recycling.

Process water and its diverse applications

There are countless potential applications for process water. It is used virtually anywhere industrial equipment requires water for operation. Examples include cooling water for machinery and plants, manufacturing processes such as grinding, and cleaning purposes (rinsing and washing water) in laundries. Methods of sourcing process water

Important sources for process water include groundwater, well water, and surface water. The recycling of wastewater is also becoming increasingly important, particularly in industrial sectors where used water is treated to be reused as process water. The required treatment method is determined by the intended application. For applications without specific requirements, simple filtration may suffice. In some cases, sedimentation—where particles settle at the bottom of a tank and the clarified water is pumped off—is enough to achieve the necessary water quality. Treatment for industrial applications is significantly more complex and may require chemical or physical processes, including filtration, flocculation, membrane filtration, UV treatment, or chlorination.

Closed-loop systems are highly resource-efficient

The best way to conserve water resources is through reuse. Unfortunately, even in closed-loop systems, water can only be reused to a certain extent, as industrial and cooling systems require periodic water exchange or the regular addition of fresh water to operate safely. Many large industrial facilities reuse process water multiple times, moving through stages of decreasing quality before it is treated again.

Key factors in process water sourcing

The required properties of process water—and what must be avoided—depend primarily on the specific application. When used as cooling water in a circuit, it must not form layers of algae, biomass, or limescale to ensure the cooling system functions correctly. Preventing corrosion is equally critical. Rust and corrosion can damage industrial equipment or cooling systems and significantly reduce their performance. In the worst-case scenario, corrosion in machine components can lead to defects and costly downtime.
