Ultrapure water for the pharmaceutical industry.

As in other industrial sectors, water is a component required for the product itself, but it is also used for cleaning systems and pipelines. In both cases, the requirements are very high. Whether Purified Water (PW) or Highly Purified Water (HPW), the core of any treatment system is always one or more membrane stages. Other components include pretreatment as well as storage and distribution. Whether all components are thermally sanitized, or whether the proven combination of ozone/UV is better suited for storage and distribution, is determined through an individual needs analysis with the customer.

Highest purity in product water treatment for a manufacturer of highly effective skincare products

The objective:

For nearly 100 years, the company has been developing highly effective skincare products using proven natural ingredients for healthy skin with a beautiful glow. The brand stands for long-standing tradition and proven quality. The existing product water treatment system could no longer keep up with the company's ever-increasing quality requirements, nor those of the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. For this reason, ATN Wasseraufbereitung was commissioned to plan and build a new product water treatment system.

Goals/Challenges

The conductivity must be reduced to a value below 1.3 µS/cm. The existing reverse osmosis system cannot achieve this value, so a second, new reverse osmosis unit must be connected. Poor raw water quality, high organic content in the water, and consequently fluctuating values for turbidity, total organic carbon, and spectral absorption coefficient – activated carbon filters are installed upstream of the UV systems. UV systems further eliminate microbiology in the raw water. Carbonic acid in the raw water prevents the required conductivity value from being met – sodium hydroxide is added to bind the free carbonic acid, which is then eliminated via the reverse osmosis membrane.

System features
To ensure the activated carbon filters remain microbiologically stable, they are sanitized with hot water in addition to periodic backwashing.
Heat exchanger upstream of the reverse osmosis system to stabilize fluctuating raw water values – this compensates for the system-related reduction in membrane performance.
To reduce chemical usage, both reverse osmosis systems can also be sterilized with hot water.
