Beverage industry

Water of excellent quality and purity.

Water of excellent quality and purity is required for mixing fruit juice drinks, soft drinks, or fruit juices. The water must support the good taste of the beverage and must not react with the ingredients. For example, fruit acids must not be neutralized. Furthermore, the microbiological purity of the water is an important criterion. The standardization of products and production also requires standardized raw materials. Consequently, desalinated product water that does not have negative interactions with other components of the final product is being used more and more frequently. In most cases, reverse osmosis is used for this purpose. Modern systems are made entirely of stainless steel and can therefore be cleaned and sanitized regularly without chemicals using hot water when needed.
Typical processes in the non-alcoholic beverage sector:
Iron removal, manganese removal, filtration, decarbonization, ion exchange, reverse osmosis/nanofiltration, disinfection, UV irradiation, water recycling for cleaning water, ultrafiltration.

Complex product water treatment system for one of the largest Dutch contract bottlers, DIS B.V.

The task:

The contract bottler DIS B.V. produces approximately 250 different products for around 40 clients. In 2013, the company built a new canning line for a major soft drink manufacturer and commissioned ATN to design and build the associated water treatment system. The scope of services included planning, design, engineering, delivery, installation, and commissioning of the turnkey system.

Goals/Challenges

Increased availability and efficiency, filling flexibility, minimized wastewater generation, a very tight construction schedule mandated by the client, rapid procurement of the certificates required by the soft drink manufacturer for the filter media and UV disinfection units, and a compact layout for the activated carbon filter, multi-layer filters, rinse water collection tank, and specifically the reverse osmosis unit (which was mounted on a frame).

System highlights
System is fully hot-water sanitizable: chemical-free disinfection using hot water up to 83 °C.
Additional quality assurance at the soft drink manufacturer's request: activated carbon filters as a third purification stage.
Parallel to the operation of the product water line, the system can also treat mineral water from a separate well, which is processed using one of the system's three multi-layer filters.
Multi-layer filters are equipped with specialized filter media and backwashed with an air-water mixture, resulting in fewer backwash cycles and increased system efficiency.
