Water as an ingredient in food

We implement water treatment systems according to your individual requirements. All potential water consumers are taken into account, from product water to water for the CIP system. Water is required in almost all areas of the food industry, starting from the purification of raw water to the finished product. In particular, water as an ingredient in food is subject to special requirements regarding chemical purity, mineralization, and, of course, hygiene. Regardless of whether the water comes from a public drinking water supply or a private well, purification or treatment is required in most cases. Trace substances of geogenic and anthropogenic origin are increasingly coming into focus.

The end product determines the water quality. You have the raw water, we have the expertise and the technology to guarantee that quality. Only after a conscientious and thorough analysis of the initial situation can we provide you with competent and goal-oriented advice.

Typical processes in the food industry:

Iron removal, manganese removal, filtration, decarbonization, ion exchange, reverse osmosis/nanofiltration, disinfection, UV irradiation, water recovery, filtration of cleaning solutions, ultrafiltration.

Producer of gourmet food products

The task

In the early days, the company exclusively produced high-quality vinegar for the retail sector. A lot has happened since then. The company has been continuously expanded, and the product range has been extended to include ketchup, pasta and barbecue sauces, and mustard. For a new production site, the company required a water treatment system and commissioned ATN with the planning and construction of this facility.

Goals/Challenges

Initially, the customer only planned for a softening system. Vinegar and fruit acids are flavor carriers in the products; the carbonates not removed by softening neutralize these flavor carriers, which can lead to a significant change in the taste of the products. No softening, but rather desalination - installation of a reverse osmosis system. Chlorine in the public water supply is harmful to reverse osmosis membranes - free chlorine is removed by adding sodium bisulfite.

System features
The quality of the reverse osmosis permeate is insufficient for the steam boiler - The permeate from the first stage of the reverse osmosis meets the salinity requirements (permeate quality and quantity decrease over the course of the treatment stages).
Boiler manufacturer requires 0 °dH - additional softening system for the boiler feed water partial flow.
The treated water is blended with raw water after reverse osmosis to achieve the desired taste through carbonate hardness.
